The original difference in packaging existed only for tracking and quality-control purposes. Around a decade ago, KMC used region-specific designs to help trace where certain batches were distributed during a short period of manufacturing inconsistencies. Once those issues were resolved — and KMC’s quality reputation fully restored — the separate designs simply lingered as a legacy holdover.

One Unified Design

Since 2016, KMC has had zero manufacturing issues, and in 2025, the company officially decided to eliminate redundant packaging. The new unified design, black with bold colored lettering, is now the standard look for both the U.S. and Japan markets. This updated packaging also comes with new UPCs to reflect the transition.
